What The Heirloom is

This is a commissioned likeness, not a print with a face dropped in. We look at the photograph the way a portrait studio does: the set of the ears, the wet of the nose, the particular way the light sits on the muzzle. Those things are why a stranger in your hallway will ask who it is — and why you will already know.

It is not an oil painting. It is not a filter, and it is not a generated image. The drawing is made for your dog, from your photo, then printed on archival paper and set in solid wood so it can live on the wall for years.

Beau’s Heirloom hangs in soft white on a living-room wall. Maple’s is dusty pink on a kitchen shelf. Lucky arrived as a gift, still in the paper. Same style, three different rooms. The constant is the likeness.

What you send

A clear photograph. Natural light, taken at your dog’s eye level, with the face and ears visible. Phone photos are fine. Older photos are fine. A slightly soft file is often usable if the face still reads. A heavy beauty filter is not — we cannot invent markings the photograph hid.

If the file will not make a beautiful portrait, the studio writes before we begin. We would rather wait for a better frame than guess at a face. More in the photo guide.

How the commission works

Upload the photograph, add their name, and add The Heirloom to your cart. Frame, size, and background can be chosen after — or left at the studio default (black / 8×10″ / soft white). Two pets share one portrait if you tick that option.

We send a digital proof before anything is printed. Look at the eyes. Ask for a softer crop, a marking we missed, a background shift. Revisions are unlimited and complimentary. Nothing is printed until you approve the file.

After you approve, we print on archival, acid-free paper and frame the work in solid wood. Packed to arrive intact. Typical studio time is one to two weeks to the first proof, a few days per round of edits, then about a week to print and ship. Free shipping over $100.

8×10″ from $89 (black or white frame, or no frame). Walnut or birch, $99. 12×16″ from $119. 18×24″ from $159. No frame if you prefer to take the print to your own framer.

Choose the size for the wall you have, not the wall you imagine. 8×10 lives on a shelf or among other frames. 12×16 holds a hallway. 18×24 is a statement over a sideboard.

Gifting The Heirloom

Lucky’s portrait left as a gift. If you are commissioning for someone else, put their address at checkout and write the occasion in the order notes. We will tell you honestly whether the proof-and-print calendar can meet a birthday, a memorial, or a holiday.

The guarantee

Hang it. Live with it. If the likeness is wrong or the print or frame is at fault, write us within thirty nights of delivery. We reprint, re-illustrate, or refund. The proof exists so this almost never happens. Questions: hello@elmandtail.com.

Materials, shipping, and the calendar

We print on archival, acid-free paper so the blacks stay black and the sheet does not yellow. Frames are solid wood — black, white, walnut, or birch — cut for the size you choose. No frame if you would rather take the print to your own framer.

Illustration and first proof typically take one to two weeks from a usable photograph. Edits are usually a few days each. After you approve, we print, frame, and ship within about a week. Free shipping over $100 inside the United States. We send tracking when the portrait leaves the studio. If you are working to a date, write it in the order notes. We will not promise a calendar we cannot keep.

Questions we hear

Is a phone photo enough? Yes, if the face is clear. Maple, Otto, and Olive all started that way.

What if I don’t like the first proof? Then we have not finished. Revisions are unlimited and complimentary. Nothing is printed until you approve.

Can two pets share one portrait? Yes. Tick “Add a second pet” and send a clear photograph of each.

Do you sell merch with the face on it? No. Elm & Tail is the portrait — paper, wood, and the proof. No mugs, no pillows, no crewnecks on this studio.
